Gabby, a senior, joined the All-Stars in May of 2015. She is in her sixth year of playing the trombone. Gabby also performs with the Longmont Jazz All Stars, and has played in the prestigious All State Jazz Band. She has also played in the Mead HS Concert, Marching and Jazz Bands.
Adam joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in May, 2013. He is a sophomore at Cherry Creek HS, where he plays both clarinet and tenor sax. Adam has been playing clarinet since 8th grade, and saxophone since 3rd grade. Music is his passion, and he has been a member of the Cherry Creek School District Honor Band. Adam has studied privately for two years. He currently plays in Cherry Creek’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble A.
Alec has been playing the trumpet and cornet for seven years. He is currently majoring in music at UNC. In his junior and senior years, Alec was selected to the prestigious Colorado All-State Jazz Band, All-State Symphonic Band and CU Honor Band. He joined the All-Stars in April of 2012, and was the third generation cornet player of the band.
Alex Brack is one of the original members of the Youth All Stars, joining the band in January, 2010. Alex was in the Fairview High School marching band for 4 years and was captain of the tuba section for 2 years. He has played tuba in the FHS Wind Ensemble for three years. He has been in the top Fairview jazz band for 3 years, two of which he was the principal player. He performed in the 2009 Mile High Jazz Festival All Star Band. Alex has received outstanding musicianship awards from the Mile High Jazz Festival. Alex has studied with Will Scharen and Bill Clark. He is currently studying to be a chef.
This will be Jake’s ninth year playing music. He’s played alto saxophone for eight years, flute for four years, tenor saxophone for two years, and clarinet for two years. Jake has participated in many honor bands in his music career including the St. Vrain District Honor Band, Combined League Honor Band, Colorado All State Concert Band, and the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. He completed his second year in the Denver Jazz Club Youth All Stars, as well as his fifth year with the Longmont Jazz All Stars. Jake was also the drum major for the Mead High School Marching Band. He is presently majoring in classical saxophone at the University of Colorado.
Spencer joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in May of 2014. He was the principal clarinetist in Mountain Vista’s Wind Ensemble. Spencer also performed in the school’s marching band. He also learned to play flute during his senior year. Spencer has been studying clarinet privately with Lance Acker for the past two years. He is currently a student at Arapahoe Community College, playing alto saxophone in the jazz band.

George Darling graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science with a minor in Audio Engineering. On June 29, 2014 he married the lovely and talented Rebecca Lugg at an outdoor ceremony at Cloudland Canyon State Park in Georgia!

Matt Darling graduated from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Clarinet in May 2015. He has been playing with the UBC Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble throughout his time at UBC.
Alex is one of the original members of the Youth All-Stars. He has played in the Standley Lake High School Jazz Band for 3 years. Alex played in the school pit orchestra during his sophomore year. He has been awarded outstanding musicianship and soloist awards at the Mile High Jazz Festival. Alex has played guitar since the 6th grade. Alex learned to play the plectrum banjo in just 4 months. He has studied with Bill Sickles and Rory Thomas. Alex received an Outstanding Musicianship Award at the 2011 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee.
Josh is a bassist, tubist, banjo player, and drummer from Castle Rock, who joined the All-Stars in April of 2012. His main musical style is Contemporary jazz, but is well versed in avant-funk, swing, rock, and bluegrass. Josh currently studies drums with Tony Pantelis, and bass with Vernon Barbary. He has worked with musicians Andrew Landers, Matt Podschweit, and Paul Kakac. Josh has performed with several Denver bands. He is concurrently enrolled in the Metro State University music program.
Tom joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in December of 2013 as the band’s plectrum banjo player. In his senior year, Tom became the pianist for the All-Stars. He also played piano in the Castle View High School Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Chamber Orchestra. Tom is inspired by Bria Skonberg, Jeff Barnhart, Eddie Erickson, and his vocal teacher, Wende Harston.
Bobby joined the band in November, 2010. He has played drum set and percussion for eight years, performing with concert/symphonic bands, choirs, jazz bands, pit orchestras, drum lines, wind ensembles, jazz combos and orchestras. Bobby was a member of the Cherry Creek School District Honor Band for 6 years. He was their first chair percussionist in 2008. Bobby was the section leader of his high school drum line in 2010 when the Smoky Hill Marching Band was awarded the “Most Improved Band” at the Colorado State Marching Band Championships. He repeated as section leader in 2011. Bobby was selected to perform in the 2011 University of Colorado Honor Band. He performed in the Blue Knights Winter Percussion Ensemble, and is a senior at Smoky Hill HS.
Cameron joined the All-Stars in May of 2011. He was very proud to be the drum major for the Arvada Reds Marching Band. Cameron was the principal trombonist of the Arvada Reds Jazz Band, as well as the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Pit Orchestra. He has performed in the 2011 and 2012 Evergreen Jazz Festivals, and the 2011 Music For All Summer Symposium’s Jazz Track in Muncie, Indiana. Cameron was also recognized as a 2012 CU-Boulder Outstanding Musician. He has studied with Dan Pinkston, Tom Ball, Eric Staffeldt, and Jon Wiegaardt. Cameron has performed with the Jefferson All-County Symphonic and Jazz Bands, and the Jeff10 Honor Band since 2009. He was honored to be the 2013 AHS Salutatorian. Cameron is attending CU-Boulder’s College of Music and is pursuing a Bachelor in Music Education Degree.
Matt joined the All-Stars in October, 2011. He is a classically-trained piano player who has been playing for 12 years. He has won numerous awards in the Douglas-Elbert Music Teachers’ Association (DEMTA), National Federation of Music Teachers, and International Duo Piano Competitions. Matt currently studies with Queen City Jazz Band pianist Hank Troy. He has been a member of the CHS Jazz Band and the CHS Con Brio Choir for two years. Matt has performed as an accompanist for students of Kathryn Fouse’s string studio, and has performed at several engagements with the Conservatory Orchestra of the Denver Youth Artists Orchestra. Matt enjoys listening to Jelly Roll Morton, Frank Sinatra, and Miles Davis, as well as a myriad of styles of music ranging from rock-and-roll to classical music.
Ben joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in February of 2014. During his senior year at Mead High School, he performed in the marching and jazz bands. Ben also played lead trumpet for the Longmont Jazz All-Stars. He performed with the DJC Youth All-Stars in the 2014 and 2015 Sacramento Music Festivals. Ben has also played tuba. He has studied trumpet with Josh Reed and Brad Goode. Ben is currently majoring in business at the University of Colorado, and is also playing in the marching band.
Spencer, a junior, joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in April, 2016. He started playing saxophone in 4th grade. Now Spencer is playing in 7 different groups on the Tenor, Alto, and Soprano saxes, as well as Bass Clarinet. He has attended the Stanford Jazz Workshop for 5 years and studied with Ravi Coletrane, Dann Zinn, and Anat Cohen, among others. Spencer has played in the CCJA combos for 4 years, and in 2015 he played in the CCJA big band. Not only has he won various awards for musicianship and skill, but Spencer has personally received compliments on his playing by the great sax players Dayna Stephens, Donny McCaslin, and Jimmy Heath.
Brent, a senior, joined the All-Stars in May of 2015. He has participated in many diverse musical ensembles in his career, including the All-State Jazz and Symphonic Bands, Front Range Youth Symphony, various honor groups, and multiple school bands. Brent even plays piano in the orchestra. He plans on majoring in music in college.
Kris was a member of the Smoky Hill HS Wind Symphony, and is a four-year veteran of Smoky Hill’s Jazz Ensemble. He has been playing the alto saxophone for over eight years, and loves being a jazz musician. Upon becoming a member of the Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Star Band in May of 2012, Kris was offered the opportunity to take on the challenge of learning a new instrument – the clarinet, which he enjoys immensely. Some of Kris’s favorite Jazz musicians are John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. When not playing or listening to Jazz, Kris enjoys playing video games, and spending time with family and friends. He hopes to soon enlist in the Air Force.
Rico Jones is an eighth grade music major at Denver Schoolof the Arts. His music experience started at Beth Eden Baptist School in the fifth grade. From the beginning he loved jazz and the blues. Rico played with the Jon Romero y Amanacer Latin Jazz Band from the sixth through seventh grade at gigs including The Taste of Colorado, Jazz in City Park, and live on the air at KUVO jazz radio. He continues to play with Amanacer from time to time. Rico auditioned and was accepted into the high school Wind Ensemble and Jazz Workshop Orchestra starting this past fall. Recently, he and several other young musicians formed a quintet called Metrognome. They played the first ever Cowtown Jazz Festival at Dazzle. Rico has also played in a duet at several private parties. His latest accomplishment was to be part of the pit orchestra in the DSA play, ‘Pajama Game.’ Rico has attended UNC’s Jazz Camp, the CCJA Camp, and became a member of the Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars in August, 2011. His love and dedication to music shows through as he spends many hours practicing above and beyond the time spent at school.
Tim Kloewer joined the Youth All-Stars in June of 2011. He started on trombone in the fourth grade and began to learn tuba, trumpet and French horn in high school. Tim has played in the school marching band, jazz band, pit orchestra, wind ensemble, and symphonic band. He was also principal tuba in the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Tim performed in Carnegie Hall in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He is currently studying with Bill Clark and attending Arapahoe Community College.
Ian joined the Youth All-Stars in August 2010. He has played saxophone, clarinet and flute for six years. Ian plays tenor sax in Jazz Band A, and clarinet in Wind Ensemble at Cherry Creek HS. He has performed at the Cherry Blossom Festival with his private teacher Lance Acker. Ian enjoys playing in jam sessions at Dazzle Jazz Club from time to time. He is currently a junior at Cherry Creek HS.
Armando is one of the founding members of the Youth All-Stars, playing clarinet until March 2010, when he switched to tenor saxophone. Armando performed in marching ensembles at three different high schools, marching alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, and conducting the Eaglecrest High School Pride of the Plains Band as their drum major. While playing with the North Hollywood High School jazz combo as a freshman, Armando was chosen to be one of three high school musicians to perform with saxophonist Eric Alexander, and Grammy Recording Artist and jazz pianst, Billy Childs. He has also performed at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Dazzle’s Jazz Club (Denver), and at the prestigious Jazz Bakery (Los Angeles). Armando has received numerous accolades for his musicianship, including several soloist awards, and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award at Eaglecrest High School. He was chosen as a Festival Apprentice for the 2010 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, in which he performed with the Big Mama Sue Trio. Armando has studied with Lance Acker. He was a member of the UC Denver Claim Jumpers during the 2010-11 school year.
Rebecca Lugg Darling graduated Belmont University in Nashville in May 2016 studying Commercial Piano. She married George Darling on June 29, 2014. They live in Nashville, are both working and attending college full time. They have two cats.
Tyvon became a DJC Youth All-Star in June of 2012. He plays the alto, tenor and baritone sax. Tyvon has been in band since 4th grade and was the senior drum major in his high school marching band. Music is what he wants to do for the rest of his life. Tyvon is majoring in music at Louisiana State University.
Andrew began performing at age 8, and joined the All-Stars, as their bassist, in May 2013. He plays electric and double bass in Evergreen High School’s Jazz Ensemble and Pit Orchestra, and percussion in their Marching Band and Winter Percussion Ensemble. At EHS Andrew has been recognized with the Woody Herman Jazz Award, the Tara Clancy Inspiration Award, and the Director’s Award. He has performed in the Jefferson County All-County Orchestra and Jeff10 Honor Orchestra, as well as the CU Summer Music Academy Orchestra. Andrew studies jazz bass with Brian Lewis and Ron Bland. Upon graduation, he will join the army and is hoping to get slotted into an intelligence position.
Kyle joined the Youth All-Stars in July of 2010. He played tuba in the Chatfield HS Marching Band and Wind Ensemble for four years. Kyle has also played trombone in Chatfield’s jazz band for three years. He has played for the Jefferson County Honor Band, the Colorado Honor Band Association, and was selected as first alternate for the prestigious Colorado All-State Band. Kyle was selected to perform in the 2011 University of Colorado Honor Band. He has studied with Bill Clark. At C.U., Kyle is currently majoring in Physics and playing in Jazz III.
Tom joined the All-Stars in April of 2014. He bounced back and forth between instruments until Tom decided to start drumming at age 15, and has been playing ever since. During Tom’s senior year at Castle View High School, he played percussion in the jazz band, the wind ensemble, and the marching band. He also played cello in the Castle View Chamber Orchestra. Tom would like to thank both his parents and the DJC Youth All-Stars for their support. He is currently a student at Arapahoe Community College, playing in the jazz band.

Daniel joined the band in July, 2010. He was in the top concert ensemble at Smoky Hill HS. Daniel was also a member of Smoky’s Jazz Band and top Concert Choir. He was in the school jazz combo that played throughout the city. Daniel has played in a Boulder saxophone quartet. In 2009, he received the C.U. Outstanding Musician Award. Daniel was selected to the 2011 University of Colorado Honor Band. He has studied with Lance Acker. Daniel is currently majoring in music performance at C.U.
Ray is the original drummer of the Youth All Stars, joining the band in November of 2009. Ray performed with his HS marching band drumline for 4 years and played drumset for the jazz bands, competitive choir, orchestras, and school musicals. He was also a percussionist in their Wind Ensemble. Ray was a percussionist with the Colorado Honor Band Association, and played drumset with their jazz bands. He also played drumset with the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts in both their small bands and latin jazz band. Ray has performed live on KUVO radio, at the 2009 Mi Casa Annual Fundraiser, the 2008 Denver release party of the USPS Latin Jazz stamp, and in various clubs around Denver. He has received outstanding musicianship awards from various music festivals, including two solo awards from the Greeley Jazz Festival. Ray is a recipient of both the Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong awards. He was named a Festival Apprentice for the 2010 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, in which he played with Bob Draga, Jason Wanner, Steve Homan, Lenny Pollacchi, and Ron Jones. He has also played with Bill Clark, Wende Hairston, Eric Staffeldt, and Colorado Music Hall of Fame member Chris Daniels. Some of the accomplished drummers Ray has studied with include Kevin Lehman, Keith Ewer, Eric Trujillo, Paul Romaine, Dr. Marcus Reddick, Skip Haddon, Yoron Israel, Henrique De Almeida, and Bob Tamagni. Ray earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Electronic Production and Design from the Berklee College of Music in 2015.
Alex started playing euphonium in the 6th grade. Without any formal lessons, he began to play the trombone, piano, trumpet, bassoon, tuba, French horn, alto saxophone and clarinet. Alex’s passion for music placed him in the Cherry Creek Honor Band for the 7 years, and the 2014/15 Colorado All State Bands. He has also participated with Tuba Christmas for the past 7 years. At Eaglecrest Alex played trombone in Jazz Combo and Jazz 1, and played euphonium for Symphonic Band and the Marching Band, where he was the Brass Sargent. He is currently majoring in music at CSU-Pueblo.
Dallas Perrault is a senior at Standley Lake High School in Westminster, Colorado. He is a leader in sports, academics, arts and the community. Dallas’s achievements include being recognized for the perseverance and skill required of becoming one of the elite high school students who have excelled at SLHS. Dallas is a two year music letterman – instrumental award winner. He was honored as 1st chair clarinet in Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble; 1st chair tenor sax in Signature Jazz, and is a member of the SLHS Illusions Choir. Dallas has performed at Disneyland in California, and at Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge in Denver with the Signature Jazz Band. He is also a key member of the SLHS Pit Band for the musicals. Dallas joined the Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars in June 2011 and has performed at various events and venues including the Evergreen Jazz Festival, the Bull and Bush Pub, Westminster Elks Club, the KUVO HS/Collegiate Live Radio Show, Flesher-Hinton Music Store’s Customer Appreciation Day, and the Metro State College Radio Day.
Alex, a senior, joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in mid-August of 2015. He has played alto saxophone for seven years and tenor saxophone for one year. Alex is the first chair alto, and plays in the school concert, marching, and jazz bands. He has also participated in the school’s pit orchestra for three years, and played with the Citywide Honor Band, Citywide Symphony, and Citywide Jazz Band for two years. In his free time, Alex also plays in a rock-jazz fusion band called The Pigz.
Copland joined the All-Stars in April 2013, and is thrilled to be performing with them. He has played in the Colorado All-State Symphonic Band, All-State Symphony Orchestra, All-State Jazz Band, and Continental League Honor Orchestra. Copland also marches and performs with the Castle View High School Band, plays piano, and composes. He would like to thank his trombone teacher, Keven Stewart, his friends, and family for their continued support.
Molly joined the Youth All-Stars in January 2010. She has been playing trumpet/cornet for nine years. Molly played in the marching band, jazz band, and wind ensemble at Fairview HS. She was a member of the 2011 Colorado All State Jazz and Concert Bands. Molly has been awarded musicianship awards at the Mile High, UNC-Greeley, and Skyline Jazz Festivals. She has studied with Dawn Kramer and John Lake. Molly was selected as a 2011 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee Next Generation All-Star. She is currently attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music.
Mika, a senior, joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in June of 2014, and quickly learned how to play the plectrum banjo. He moved from Castle View HS, and is now in his third year as the upright bassist for the Chaparral High School Jazz Band and Orchestra. Mika has performed in jazz festivals and clubs at Sacramento, New Orleans, Switzerland and Italy. His favorite jazz artists are Eddie Erickson, Rory Thomas, Wende Harston and Louis Armstrong. Mika plans to study music after he graduates from high school.
Trevor is thrilled to be starting his second year as pianist for the Youth All-Stars and has started singing vocals this year. He started taking private piano lessons when he was 5 and has been playing ever since. Trevor has received awards for classical and jazz piano including, most recently, Youth All-Star award at the 2013 Sacramento jazz Festival. He also plays drums, guitar, and bass, and plans to continue with music in college.
Colton joined the All-Stars in April 2012. He’s been playing drums for over seven years, and has been a member of the Evergreen High School Marching and Jazz Bands. In addition to school-sponsored ensembles, Colton has played in numerous garage bands around Evergreen and Conifer over the past few years, playing at venues such as the Evergreen Lake House. In addition to playing the drums, Colton is proficient at numerous other instruments including the guitar, bass, mandolin, and banjo. He has received soloist awards at numerous high school jazz band festivals, and has twice received superior ratings at Solo & Ensemble Contests. Colton was also a two-year member of the Choral Images, the select choir at Evergreen High School. He currently studies with Dean Oldencott and Todd Reid. Colton is majoring in recording engineering at the University of Denver.
Mason joined the Youth All-Stars in November of 2011. At Cherry Creek High School he is in the Wind Ensemble and Jazz A. Mason has been a member of the CCHS Marching Band for the past 3 years. He is in his third year as a member of the CCHS Percussion Ensemble. Last year they placed second in Concert World Class. Mason has been in District Honor Band for the past three years. He has performed with various orchestra and choirs at Cherry Creek HS. Mason has played percussion for five years, and has studied privately for four years.
Ben, a senior, joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in July, 2015. He has played the piano for 10 years, saxophone for 4 years, and has also sung in choirs for 4 years. Ben has studied privately on piano for all 10 years. He is a member of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts, the Fairview HS Jazz Band, and has participated in the Jazz in the Sangres.
Jon, a junior, joined the All-Stars in April of 2016. He has participated in many diverse musical ensembles in his career, and currently performs in the Centaurus HS concert, jazz and marching bands. Jon is in his sixth year of playing the trumpet, and has studied privately for the last five years.
Jake Wallace plays cornet, trumpet and flugel horn. He has been playing trumpet for 8 years, and has studied privately for five. Jake joined the All-Stars in May 2013. He also plays in Cherry Creek’s Wind Ensemble, Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble A. Jake plans on majoring in music education and trumpet performance. He would like to thank Dr. Cannava for the chance to play with the All-Stars, and looks forward to a great year.
Benedict joined the DJC Youth All-Stars in June, 2011. He has been playing comet for eight years. Benedict holds first chair in the Wind Ensemble, Pep Band, and Jazz Band at Castle View. He has also been the bugler for his scout troop for a year. Benedict was one of the top 22 youth trumpet/comet players in the country of Wales_ He is currently in the process of composing several concert melodies and a jazz tune for the All-Stars. Benedict is studying with Melissa Steinbock and has taken lessons from Charlie Smith and John Bartmann.
Braeden, a senior, joined the All-Stars in April of 2016. He is in his fifth year of playing the trombone, and has been studying privately for the last year. Braeden also plays euphonium and bass trombone. He performs in the Bear Creek HS Concert, Marching (brass captain) and Jazz Bands.
Mike, a senior, joined the All-Stars in May, 2016. He started playing drums in 5th grade. Michael has continued to grow as an all around percussionist having twice won the Colorado State Percussion Championships as a member of Chaparral’s Winter Percussion Ensemble in Scholastic World Class. He has been selected twice to the Continental League’s Honor Band. Currently, he performs with the Chaparral HS Jazz Band, Winter Percussion Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Wolverine Orchestra, and is Drum Line Captain and Center Snare for the Marching Band.
